We are looking forward to National Careers that runs from March 7 – 12.

Posters highlighting inspirational quotations are now on display in the careers’ room at school and around the corridors giving our students lots of food for thought.

Our students and teachers will also be taking part in activities around what high performance means to them and their non-negotiables.

To top it off there will be an exciting competition for students to enter.

Ms Raja, our Careers’ Advisor, is always available for helpful advice and information in school too should our pupils need to see her about their future paths.

WORLD BOOK DAY APPROACHES AND WE CAN’T WAIT

By Publicity Manager1st March 2022

This Thursday, March 3, St Bonaventure’s will join over 100 countries around the globe to celebrate World Book Day.

World Book Day changes lives through a love of books and shared reading. Reading is a very important part of our culture and we want all our students to develop a life-long habit of reading for pleasure and benefit from the improved life chances this brings them.

As part of our celebration, staff and students will be discarding their usual uniforms and work attire and swapping them for a variety of colourful and wonderful costumes and dressing up to encourage reading.

There will be prizes awarded for the best-dressed students, as well as fun and games around the themes of reading taking place throughout the day.

There’s still plenty of time to get thinking and put together a costume for Thursday and join in the fun.

We can’t wait to see the magnificent outfits that come through the school gates as this is one of our favourite dates on the school calendar.

NEW HEADTEACHER APPOINTED

By Publicity Manager5th June 2019

I am very pleased to inform you, that after a lengthy and highly competitive interview process, the Governing Board of St Bonaventure’s has appointed Mr Christopher McCormack as the next Headteacher of this school.

Christopher McCormack has been at St Bonaventure’s since September 2003 and over the last 16 years he has dedicated himself completely to the students in the school. He is well known by all in the school community, current students and Old Bonaventurians will testify to his skill, talent and love.

As Christopher is already part of St Bonaventure’s, this will mean that there will be a seamless transition from my tenure as Headteacher to his. Ā Over the next 5 weeks I will hand over the responsibility of running this great school and this will occur without detriment to staff, students or any of our partners.

In September, he will be ready to lead St Bonaventure’s and the school community will not be unsettled, which is often the outcome of a new Headteacher appointment.

I thank God that I will be able to leave St Bonaventure’s knowing that all is safe and secure under his leadership.

Please keep the school, Christopher and the whole community in your prayers as they enter the next phase in this historical school’s life.

Yours Sincerely,

Paul Halliwell

Departing Headteacher.

DOUBLE JUNIOR NBA CHAMPS DOUBLE WOW!

29th April 2019Publicity Manager
Last week will go down in history in school as our fabulous young basketballers in Year 7 and Year 8 won the Junior NBA category.
Coach Onierti went on to explain:Ā  “It was a journey that started back in September where the Year 7 and 8 basketball teams played their first Jr NBA games of the season. Both teams won their respective leagues, they then went on a successful playoff run seeing off the likes of Bishop Challoner, Oaks Park School and Chadwell Heath Academy to advance to the the final 4.Ā
St Bons had made it to the year 7 Jr NBA finals in 4 consecutive years, managing to win 2 and come third twice. This year makes it 5 in a row and looking for our 3rd title. The first game was against St. Thomas Moore who played under the NBA franchise (Toronto Raptors), a thrilling game that was mostly dominated by St Bon’s playing as
( Indiana Pacers). St Bon’s finished the game 41-18 victory and advanced to play against Holy Trinity (Dallas Mavericks).Ā
The final was a one sided affair with St Bon’s out classing Holy Trinity in every aspect of the game. The boys were superior in every position and went on to win 62-4. A well deserved win with a third title secured.Ā
This year will see the Jr NBA run a year 8 competition for the first time. St Bon’s were playing under the franchise (Milwaukee Bucks) Ā and were looking to defend their title. The first game was against Wimbledon College (Atlanta Hawks) who entered the competition for the first time and had an impressive run to the finals. A nervy start from both teams made it a close encounter early on but the cool and calm St Bon’s team slowly crept ahead and never looked back. They defended amazingly well and sailed to victory with a 54 – 18 win. They went on to face Kingsdale School (San Antonio Spurs) who were last years semi finalists.
The final game started well for St Bon’s taking a early lead 11-6, things slowed down mid way through the first half as Kingsdale went on a 6-0 run. St Bon’s would eventually gather their strength and eventually sail to victory with yet another impressive win 45-23.Ā
Winning one Jr NBA title was nice but winning two in a space of two days was special. Not only that, defending last year’s title is more rewarding. It has been a successful campaign, one that will go down in St Bon’s sporting history.”
We can’t argue with that.
Marc and Noah were Junior NBA Ambassadors for the games too.

School Council Meeting 28/11/2018!

By Nathaniel Achea27th November 2018

On Wednesday 28th November 2018, the School Council will be having a meeting to elaborate on the foci of the year which we have received from you and your peers. We will also been discussing on some more severe problems such as water fountain vandalism and the misuse of toilet facilities. We will be looking at ways on how we can improve the school environment but we won’t bring up old topics such as canteen food which is largely often brought up, we want to look up at other things which have the same importance.

In the morning, you all could have a conversation with your year’s School Councillors if you have any ideas that need to be stated in the meeting as it will take place during period 1. I would just like to ensure that if you ever have any problems about the school, just notify the School Councillors verbally or via sending an email so that we can always make the voice of the students heard.

Please make sure you are keeping up to date with school news as they will be upcoming activities you may be interested in.

ExtraOrdinary School Council Meeting With LBN

By Nathaniel Achea5th November 2018

On the 2nd of November 2018, the School Council were visited by Councillor Julianne Marriott and Peter Gibb. They came to St Bonaventure’s to discuss what their jobs as part of the Newham Council were and asked some very interesting and educational questions about education in Newham.

Councillor Marriott started off the meeting by raising the question to the School Council about ‘What is a bad school?’. We were all placed into groups and discussed ideas on ‘What is a bad school ?’ among our groups in which we all fed back to each other as an whole.

The School Council came up with many sensible and appropriate answers such as bad leadership, lack of ethos, environmental safety and many more ideas.

Then, Councillor MarriottĀ raised another question opposing the first question she raised, which was ‘What is a good school?’. We then got put into different groups and discussed ideas on ‘What is a good school’ which were all fed back to each other as a whole.

The School Council came up with great and tantalizing answers such as good results signifying good pastoral systems, good leadership, care within the wider community and many more.

The final question, Councillor Marriott brought up was ‘What do you need to do to prepare yourself for life after school?’. This question made the School Council put quite a lot of thought into the answers, we presented the ideas that we gathered in our groups and said them one by one, they were very influential and intriguing. Here are some of the answers we came up with: good grades, personal life skills, communication, leadership, career advice and much more.

Meeting Update

By Jesse Okoro19th October 2018

During this academic year, the School Council team main focus is to make improvements for our school. However, we have to think about our local community, especially as it getting cold and we are almost in winter. During the meeting, we discussed ways we could help to achieve this such as doing a Film Friday or a Cake sale. We have heard many complaints about the School meals and Toilets. We are planning to make a change soon.
If you have any suggestions to help make the school a better place please speak to the Head boy – Chibuike Agu or any of the School Council representatives.

If you were wondering who was Chibuike Agu this is him.

Thanks for your time!

School Council away day

By Matteo Bedoya Vinasco24th November 2017

Our new student council participated in an exciting trip on November 7 to Gilwell Park in Chingford where they took part in a variety of activities and challenges.

After a short journey in the minibus, the group arrived at the stunning scenery of the park where they were kindly greeted and whisked off to a conference room to begin.

The newly elected representatives were briefed by former NUS President Liam Burns, who helped them to understand what it truly meant to be a student council member.

One thing that soon became clear was the initial silence as everyone sat down which was probably due to the age gap between students. After listening to Liam, they began to learn it’s important to understand how deeply and how widely an issue is taken and that focusing on multiple problems at the same time will lead to nothing being done and gathering knowledge from one another. As well as that, names were learnt using an adjective. For example: if your name begins with L, you had to find an adjective with L, (Lively Liam). This was a fun getting-to-know-you exercise and an ice breaker.

One of the first activities was to remove a fake bomb from a circle marked by a small fence. No-one was allowed to enter the circle and all they were given were two ropes and each other. At this point they still didn’t know each other very well but the bonding soon started. At first, the older students took the lead and were thinking of ideas before the nervous younger ones eventually became involved. They worked together to achieve their goal as multiple people needed to hold each side of the rope. In an amazingly quick time it was removed and then the student council members began talking to those out of their year group.

The last activity took place indoors, where the council members had to climb a ladder and no ordinary ladder, but a massive one, where every step you climbed, the spaces inbetween got bigger. As three of the members climbed, the others helped by pulling a rope connected to the climber, helping the advance in this challenge. Luckily, everyone managed to reach the top, with the help of the whole crew.

The trip was an amazing experience and helped to develop confidence and trust between the student council which led them to truly learn what it means to represent St Bon’s.
