The Scrabble Showdown got off to a fabulous start in the library yesterday, February 26, with 9 Colman playing 9 Wall.
9 Wall, fuelled up with their pasta bake (thanks, Jane!) kicked off with a 3-letter word, scoring a marvellous 16 points with ‘fib’. They certainly weren’t fibbing when they said they were good at this game and only got better, scoring 15 points with ‘wren’, 19 points with ‘jinx’ and a whopping 20 points with ‘ego’ proving that scrabble is certainly a game of strategy!
9 Colman gave it their all, working beautifully as a team. While I’m sure nobody is a fan of tax, it finally managed to redeem itself, scoring 9 Colman 10 points, while ‘queen’ scored them a noteworthy 16 points.
The game was one of skill and determination, but with one man down and a cheerleader in the form of Ms Sood, 9 Wall were Monday’s champions in 2018’s first Scrabble Showdown with 90 points against 9 Colman’s 66 points!
Well done, 9 Colman- see you in the finals!
While this game was an incredible one, the real nail-biting match was between the meer mortal maths teacher, Mr Onireti and a real-life Countdown Champion (and now Scrabble master), Ms Corriette. Ms Corriette stormed into an incredible lead with a risky ‘query’ ‘ut’ and ‘qi’, using her ‘q’ more than effectively and scored a massive 51 points. With Ms Corriette hot on his heels, Mr Onireti managed to place some high-scoring tiles including a 42-pointer, but that wasn’t enough to beat Ms Corriette who managed to place all 7 tiles in one round with ‘decided’ for 70 points. The game lasted for over 2 hours but with 315 points to Mr Onireti’s 220 points, Ms Corriette was the champion of the Staff Scrabble Showdown part 1.
It promises to be an exciting week.
